The Thing
back to process studies
This was the first sketch for a huge, bold, colorful 4 foot wide Pop Art portrait of the Thing.
I did a tight drawing in pencil. I used a 70s era version of the character.
I inked the drawing, using a brush as I could as I would need to recreate the lines later in acrylic
Then I colored the image digitally. I experimented with some other backgrounds, but I wanted to stay away from primary colors, and magenta/purple did the trick
I used a grid to transfer the image to the large canvas in charcoal.
I traced the image in Sharpie and began painting. I started with the background colors
Then the orange and yellow. You can see the printed image with the grid.
Then I added the highlights and shadows. All the colors were appropriate to the 64 color palette used in old comic books.
Next I did the black lines. I tried to use a bold classic looking comic book line.
I pulled off the tape and did some final clean up and the painting was done!
